The news we’ve been waiting for is here - thanks to everyone’s support, cigarette packs will never look the same again.
Last year, after three years of campaigning, M.Ps voted in favour of plain, standardised cigarette packaging. Today, the High Court ruled that all challenges made by the tobacco industry against standardised packaging have failed.
This means that from tomorrow, we will begin to see standard packs on the shelves and children will be protected from glitzy tobacco products. Over a quarter of cancer cases are still caused by tobacco and so this is a huge landmark in our journey towards a tobacco-free future.
Find out about why introducing standard packs is so important and the specific changes to packaging taking place in this Cancer Research UK blog post.
The Guardian report that CR UK chief executive Sir Harpal Kumar said"It’s the beginning of the end for packaging that masks a deadly and addictive product. It’s taken many years to get to this point and it reflects a huge effort aimed at protecting children from tobacco marketing,” he said.
