What Is Relay?

Relay for Life is a 24 hour event that brings the community together to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research UK. Teams of anything from 8 to 20 people get together before the event to fundraise for the charity. Then on the weekend of Relay they set out on a 24 hour walk. The aim is for the team to have at least one member of the team walking around the track at all times. Teams camp out at the event and it really is a fantastic event with a great family atmosphere. Everyone had a wonderful time last year. The weekend kicks off with the Survivors' Lap of Honour, where cancer survivors - the guests of honour - walk the first lap of the relay whilst being cheered on by family and friends!

There are 37 Relay For Life events around the UK - and we are delighted to say that one of those is here in Stockport!  This year will be our 11th Relay For Life in Stockport, over which time we've raised over £400,000 to fund vital research into beating this terrible disease.

One participant said of last years event - "I have never laughed or cried as much in 24 hours as I did at Relay.  It's a real life changing experience and now I've been to one I will be coming to them all."

The real highlight of the weekend is the Candle of Hope ceremony taking place as night falls. This gives us time to reflect on those touched by cancer where Candles of Hope are placed round the side of the track with messages in memory and celebration of loved ones. This is a truly poignant and thought provoking moment and is not to be missed.
