Three’s
A Crowd
Team captain Liz writes...
This year I am going to be Team
Captain for 'Three's a Crowd' - the name reflects the size of the team.
We chose it because for most of the Relay it will be just me and my
husband doing the walking! In fact, Andy intends to try and walk the full
24hours. This is a good thing because he'll be walking instead of
drinking! We will have my son and
daughter on the team too but not for the entire weekend. Joe and Frankie are
taking A levels and GCSE's respectively and have crucial exams before and after
the relay so their time spent at Relay has to be less this year. Other family
members (and the craziest of our close friends) will
join our team to walk some parts during the weekend too! I think this will be the 9th Stockport Relay
we've been involved in... previous years I have been supporting either Jayne or
Clare in organising a much bigger team...we keep changing our
name for some reason I don't understand but it began as 'Tom's
Trackers' because we all worship at St Thomas' then last year we were 'The Generation
Game Team' to reflect the size and different ages which our HUGE team
comprised. In the past, our inspiration
has been, like others, to do everything we can in support of raising awareness
and much-needed funds for Cancer Research. At the beginning of last year, I
had a Cancer diagnosis myself so learnt first hand what it means
to be a Cancer sufferer and how devastating it is for those closest
to a Cancer patient undergoing treatment.
I underwent two separate surgeries, six months of chemotherapy, a month
of radiotherapy and continue to have ongoing treatment. Unfortunately,
last year I was too sick to take part in the Relay but my friends and
family did me proud.. this year I return as a Survivor to take
part in what will be, for me, a truly amazing Relay! I'm now on the
mend and hoping my 'run-in' with Cancer is behind me. Sadly, with Cancer, it
never really is behind you... it's a shadow you can't shake off. Every year The Relay For Life breathes
life and hope into the lives of those touched by Cancer and it's an opportunity
to rejoice for those who literally owe their life to Cancer Research UK.
